The Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC), the lead Philippine government agency that promotes and protects the rights and welfare of children, condemns all acts of violence.
The alleged bullying incident from the Ateneo Junior High is a red flag for all of us but has to be managed and handled carefully as it involves two minors. Both of the children have to be protected and we cannot allow them to be subjected further to cyberbullying.
We call for a thorough investigation and assessment of the case by the School Management to address the underlying reasons of the act committed by a child and appropriate interventions should be accorded to both parties.
CWC Executive Director Mary Mitzi Cajayon-Uy, one of the primary authors of the Anti-Bullying Law when she was in Congress, calls for the full enforcement of the said law in schools and commits to work closely with the Department of Education (DepEd), being a member of the CWC Board. We will also work on the adoption of the DepEd Child Protection Policy in both public and private schools.
Studies show that experiencing or being exposed to violence increases the risk that an individual will use violence against their partners, peers, family members and other people creating an unending cycle of violence. This must be stopped!
